Theory Of Writing

The writing is persuasive; knowledgeable; a tool for people to express themselves and a voice that does not require sound to be understood. I have learned a lot taking the Writing for Engineers course; to the point where I understood that writing does not need highly English vocal pronunciation or command of English. In fact, the key to mastering or getting a well-done writing paper is using a large vocabulary and knowing grammar problems. Do not take me wrong, writing and speaking go by hand; however, coming from a third-world country where the education and language are completely different from the United States; I guarantee that reading and discovering new vocabulary is the key to mastering writing.

I have always kept my word, a writer is like a painter, at the beginning of your work there is no theme, setting, or organization; however, the end result is a work of art. Furthermore, I can say that the writing area is very competitive. If a writer wants to express their words to the world, the writer must expect competition, since a writer’s writing is one of many. During the session classes for Writing for Engineers, I realized that my writing was not the best of all, which motivated me to further improve my skills.

Weaknesses:

Some weaknesses throughout the Engineering Writing course were the misconception of not writing the references in alphabetical order. Other weaknesses were the expression or construction of the sentences which made it difficult to read the sentence. In addition, clearly indicating and specifying the source of the information were other important aspects that needed improvement. Finally, some sentences were fragmented with incorrect punctuation. However, what helped me understand and solve these writing problems was the feedback from Professor Elisabeth von Uhl. The feedback process helped me a lot by revising my work before submitting it.

Figure 1

Note: This was a 4-sentence assignment for the Cross-Cultural perspective course.

The presented writing piece showed me that I had to evaluate my writing quality. As you can see, lack of vocabulary; no commas; run-on sentences; bad opening sentences, etc. These were some of the qualities that I had to improve. Moreover, leveling up and writing further were some of the goals I set for myself. In order to have better performance and clarity in my writing in other courses, I needed to develop and acquire other writing techniques.

Note: This paper was from the same cross-cultural perspective course and the purpose was to identify 1 citation from the text and comment on its motives regarding intersex patients.

As the audience can see, the above writing piece, compared to the second figure, demonstrates a more advanced writing skill. The entrance, the sequence of clarity, the use of the evidence, and the identification of the information given about the evidence, among countless other things, is a sample of the development that I had throughout my time in this class. Also, some of the tools that helped me develop better writing were doing as many drafts as I could which also went hand in hand with peer review. In this class, I realized how important it is to do peer reviews with your peers. Every time you start writing, a lack of organization is normal, the good thing is that with the help of your colleagues you can apply organization in your work.

Therefore, I believe that this class helped me to climb and perform better not only in other classes but also in my career in the future. I believe that the knowledge that I have achieved in this course will never be taken away from me, in fact, it will not be forgotten and I am sure that every day it will be developed much more.
